Don’t put the cart before the horse
I receive a large number of requests from aspiring models who ask me to shoot a portfolio for them. Of course, I’m usually available to do this for a reasonable fee.
However, talking to many, it seems that hiring me is based on a fundamental misunderstanding. Specifically, many think that the pictures I, or any good photographer would produce, would help them get signed to a fashion agency.
Integrity, of course, requires me to put them right, and this is what I say.
Aspiring models who seek representation with a fashion agency do not need professional photographs in order to get signed. Paying for such photographs before signing with an agency is putting the cart before the horse. Fashion agencies don’t want to see photoshopped pictures, or theatrical poses , lighting, and outfits. They want snapshots of you. The only real exception to this is if you are moving from one agency to another.
Seeing exactly what they want is as simple as calling the agency, or looking at their website.
By way of information, see www.albamodel.info, and look at the agency boards, being realistic as to whether you look like the people on there.
And here are the submission requirments for most leading London agencies:
“ Please provide Snapshots/Polaroids that show very clear headshot and full length images.
No makeup, shot outside with natural light and in a basic color top and bottom.”
“FM Agency has an open call between 3pm and 4pm when potential models can walk in without an appointment (but with some pictures) and meet one of our agents; or you can send us pictures of yourself (one headshot and one full length) by post, or by email to email@example.com with a note of your height. If you would like your pictures returned please include a stamped and addressed envelope.”
